 Collagen is a natural protein that provides structural support. In the skin collagen provides texture, resiliency, and shape. As we age the collagen framework weakens and our skin loses its elasticity, giving rise to lines and wrinkles.
Collagen Replacement Therapy (CRT) replenishes the skin’s natural collagen support layer, smoothing facial lines and many types of scars. CRT is a non-surgical treatment in which Zyderm and/or Zyplast Collagen Implants (substances derived from purified bovine [cow] collagen) are injected just beneath the surface of the skin into areas where the body’s own collagen has been weakened, raising depressions to the level of the surrounding skin. Thus, lines and scars can be minimized and skin texture is improved. In most people, CRT is a safe and convenient way to minimize lines, wrinkles, and scars.
Skin testing is performed prior to treatment to help detect patients who may have an allergic reaction to bovine collagen. Treatment involves a series of office visits, usually two weeks apart. Most patients see considerable improvement in 1-3 treatment sessions, depending upon the size, shape, and texture of the area undergoing treatment. Just like natural collagen, injectable collagen eventually loses its form and wears down. Ongoing treatments are required to maintain the improvements achieved with CRT.
